1952 Chevy 3100 Barn Find

I know, I know, everyone calls their vehicle a barn find these days, but I, along with the previous owner personally pulled this out of the barn, that he parked it in, in 1976! Yep – this one was parked, and nearly forgotten about 45 years ago. I found this particularly interesting since that is the year I was born, amazing it sat there the whole time!

Talking with the original owner was especially interesting – and while he liked the old 52, and had many good memories with it, he was happy when he parked it because it meant finally being able to afford a newer truck.

This pickup was the one that fed the livestock, took the kids to school, went to the grocery store, and occasionally took him fishing. Everyone loves taking their old ride out on a nice spring day for a cruise, or going to get ice cream, or to a car show, but go start it up a 2 degree February day, load some day in the back, and go feed the animals – you get a whole different perspective.

He reckoned that pickups of the 40’s and 50’s were a lot like a pick axe – you may not enjoy it, but you are sure glad you have it when you need it. A lot of history with this one!

I got the old truck home and got it cleaned out – I bet I washed 100lbs of barn dust off. What I found beneath all that is a very solid old truck. A couple of rust spots, but not much – very solid overall. Very nice floors, and even has the original wood in the bed. It was obviously a farm truck so it has its share of dings, but it is very straight overall.

It is missing the driver side door glass – and he had changed driver side door and fender probably 50 years ago – when a curious steer got into them.

As far as the engine – we cleaned up the points, added a battery and some fresh gas, and she fired right up. It’s actually amazing how good it sounds after sitting for 45 years.

There are a couple of things keeping it from being drivable – it currently has no brakes, master cylinder is dry from sitting – and I didn’t even try to mess with them, and the throttle linkage from gas pedal to carb is broke.

This should be a perfect project for a weekend mechanic or a great father son project. I have sold several similar old trucks to this one, and feel free to check my feedback, but also be aware that this isn’t a new vehicle ready to hop in and go on a trip. Typically these type trucks need many of the same things such as wheel cylinders, master cylinder, water pump, gas tank cleaning, carburetor kit, hoses, belts – each truck is different – but these are the basics.
