1948 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe

For consignment, a 1948 version of a Super Deluxe which is in rough but complete condition.  A barn find with a mostly solid body, a rough interior, and an intact drivetrain.  Are you feeling the rat rod vibes that I am?

Exterior

We see a weather worn and patinaed finish in black paint, well worn bulbous steel panels, and plenty of preserved but aged trim spears, bumpers, badging, and brite-work.  Hints of underlying rust are appearing as drip stains from the trimming on the vertical surfaces and heavy surface rust is showing through the paint on the hood, trunk, fender tops and roof.  Invasive rust is starting to take over the rockers, lower fenders and doors, but considering the age, it’s not really that bad.  In 1948, the fenders still protruded from the main body, and a running board became a flared rocker, but the curved steel styling remained, and it would be a few more years until the fenders would melt into the bodies.  Black 16-inch steel wheels sport chrome trim rings, and surface rusted dog dish hub caps, and are wrapped in blackwall radials all around.

Interior

Torn, soiled and wrinkled light blue vinyl covers the door panels with a worn and shredded armrest showing on both sides and patinaed black steel sills above  Shiny actuators and handles are in this tactile field of vinyl.  Turning our attention to the seats we note soiled and stained striped broadcloth making up the seats, which are bolstered in gray vinyl to add some edging to the front split bench and rear bench seats. The upholstery is in dire need of recovering.  Well preserved gray metal and cracked ivory padding covers the dash and plenty of chrome is on the dash front as the car was originally built in the art deco style.  2 large round gauges in the form of a clock and speedometer flank a center located radio and speaker cover.  On the driver’s side are 4 rectangular gauges with a black dot pattern on a white field, then some gold accenting has been added.  They just don’t make use of color like this anymore.  An original bakelite steering wheel fronts the dash and is missing the center horn button/badge.  A few remnants of carpet are still on the floor with the majority removed, exposing the surface rusted steel below.  Up top a broadcloth headliner hangs in shreds.

Drivetrain

A 239ci flathead V8 showing heavy patina has a 2-barrel Holley 94 Model 59 carburetor which is protected by an oil bath air cleaner.  A 3-speed manual transmission is on the back, as a 3.78 gear ratio brings up the rear.  Some newer ignition wiring is noted along with newer spark plugs.

Undercarriage

Heavy surface rust, some road dirt, and some nice patina cover a solid foundation with the structural damage seen being heavy invasive rust on the inner rockers.  Transverse leaf springs make up the suspension all around as do drum brakes.  Surface rusted exhaust with a newer muffler is noted along with a newer fuel tank.

Certainly not perfect, but overall a very solid presentation from an unrestored barn find car.  It’s patined luster holds a certain charm one can not achieve with even today’s technology of faux aging.  Complete, but in need of some TLC and after the job is finished you’ll be able to sit back and admire your hard work as gaggles of onlookers gawk in awe.
